Eric L. Sorkin Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Sorkin has 25 years of making strategic investments and business development. He has been
affiliated with Immtech since 1998, when he became an investor. In 2000, Mr. Sorkin became a director
for the Company, and more recently was appointed Chairman of the Board and CEO. Mr. Sorkin began
his career on Wall Street in 1982 working at Dean Witter, which is now a subsidiary of Morgan Stanley,
and from an entry-level position, he was promoted to Managing Director within six years. He was among
the core group of professionals at the firm, which developed the firm's investment portfolio with assets
of over USD $3 billion. Mr. Sorkin was responsible for investment selection, negotiations, transaction and
financial structuring, debt placement, and asset management. Mr. Sorkin was Officer of over 20 public
investment partnerships with investment funds totaling over USD $1 billion. In 1993, Mr. Sorkin created
his own investment firm and began making private equity investments in the U.S. and in China. Mr. Sorkin
graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in Economics.
Ms. Chan has 22 years of experience in making strategic investments and business development.
She began working on Immtech's growth strategy in 1998 and spearheaded Immtech's initial public
offering in April 1999. Ms. Chan is responsible for strategic development, creating joint ventures,
fundraising, and directing the Company's uses of capital resources as the firm advances through
its various growth stages and achievements. Prior to joining Immtech, Ms. Chan was a Vice President
at Dean Witter until 1993. During her eight years at that firm Ms. Chan completed over $500 million
in investments and was Officer of public partnerships with assets of over $800 million. Since 1993,
Ms. Chan has developed and funded investments in the U.S. and in China. She graduated from
New York University with a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business.
Gary C. Parks Secretary, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Parks joined Immtech in January 1994, having previously served at Smallbone, Inc. from 1989 until 1993 where he was Vice President, Finance. Mr. Parks was a Division Controller with International Paper from 1986 to 1989. Prior to that, he was Vice President of SerckBaker, Inc., a subsidiary of BTR plc, from 1982 to 1989 and a board member of SerckBaker de Venezuela. Mr. Parks holds a B.A. from Principia College and an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan.
Carol Ann Olson, M.D., PhD Senior Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development and Chief Medical Officer
As Immtech's Senior Vice President of Pharmaceutical Development, Dr. Olson leads the development of Immtech's pharmaceutical products from drug candidate status through global registration and launch, followed by appropriate life cycle management. She is responsible for strategic planning and execution of all aspects of the clinical development plans, including preclinical and clinical research, chemistry, manufacturing and controls (CMC), regulatory affairs, and regulatory compliance and quality assurance. Dr. Olson joined Immtech from Abbott Laboratories where she worked for 11 years in various functions, most recently as Global Project Head and Global Medical Director for all Abbott antibiotics. In this capacity, Dr. Olson handled strategic planning, execution of clinical development plans, drug product safety, scientific communications, regulatory affairs planning and execution, and support for the commercial success of these products. Dr. Olson received her MD with Honors in 1986 from The Pritzker School of Medicine, The University of Chicago, and her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1982 from The University of Chicago. While at Abbot Laboratories she received the Outstanding Achievement Award, Global Medical Affairs (2001) and the Chairman's Award (1994).
Norman A. Abood, PhD Senior Vice President, Discovery Programs
As Immtech's Senior Vice President of Discovery Programs, Dr. Abood works directly with the scientific consortium and contract vendors to develop and implement plans for each research program including, but not limited to, the antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral programs. He has over 15 years experience in the healthcare and pharmaceutical industry. A former registered pharmacist, Dr. Abood received his B.S. Pharmacy and M.S. Medicinal Chemistry degrees from Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences graduating in 1984. He completed his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from Ohio State University in 1987 and was awarded a Research Fellowship from the National Cancer Institute in 1986-1987. After completing a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Organic Chemistry at Indiana University, Dr. Abood held a number of supervisory roles as a Research Scientist in the Discovery Medicinal Chemistry Department at Searle between 1989 and 1999, and served as Senior Project Manager for Pharmacia/Pfizer R&D for the following five years, where he was responsible for advancing several early and late stage development projects through key milestones in the drug development process.
Daniel M. Schmitt Senior Vice President of Licensing and Commercial Development
Mr. Schmitt is responsible for development and execution of commercial strategies for Immtech's pipeline of products. Mr. Schmitt has 20 years of industry experience in product planning and business development, having held similar positions in both large pharmaceutical and small biotechnology companies. Most recently, Mr. Schmitt was at First Genetic Trust (FGT), where he served as Director of Academic Partnerships. Prior to joining FGT, Mr. Schmitt was Director of Global Oncology at Searle/Pharmacia, where he headed the commercial teams for Searle's anti-angiogenesis, immunotherapy, and cancer vaccine programs. During his career, Daniel has led and contributed to the successful development and launch of over 12 pharmaceutical products. Mr. Schmitt received his M.B.A and a B.S. in Chemistry from West Virginia University and has held research positions affiliated with the National Foundation for Cancer Research and at the University of North Carolina, School of Medicine.
Lawrence A. Potempa, PhD Vice President, Research and Chief Scientific Officer
Dr. Potempa has over 25 years experience in medical research and drug development, primarily in areas of biochemistry, microbiology and immunology. Dr. Potempa is responsible for working with the Company's Scientific groups to accelerate drug discoveries into human clinical trials; working with colleagues from Immtech, the Scientific Consortium and foundations that support efforts to advance needed drugs to market safely and quickly. He has extensive discovery and development experience in new drug substances and is the primary inventor on over 22 US, and 50 global patents. He has held academic appointments at Northwestern University Medical School and Rush University Medical College and has been Director of the Graduate Division of Immunology/Microbiology and a consultant to the Hospital's Clinical Laboratory Services. He is the recipient of a number of grants and awards and is a member of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Potempa received his B.S. degree in Biology from Bradley University, and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Northwestern University.
